Introduction:

Demonstrating the safety of software associated with ADF Explosive Ordnance (EO) is a prescribed requirement within the ADF EO Safety Program (DEOP 100). This short course provides an introduction to the various aspects related to the assessment of software safety within EO. The course will enable students to gain an understanding of the key requirements, as well as identifying specific lessons learnt that have been encountered with EO Systems employing safety critical software.

Target Audience:

All engineering personnel that review and/or assess guided Explosive Ordnance (EO). This course will also be of interest to all EO Engineers within Explosives Materiel Branch (EMB) who have an involvement in managing Safety Critical Software associated with ADF guided EO. This course will also provide useful background information to industry personnel/suppliers of EO items to EMB.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Informing ADF members (Project Managers, Engineering Manager, Logisticians, etc) of the mandatory requirement to assess the safety of EO containing safety critical software
  • Gain an appreciation of the methodologies used by foreign military agencies to provide confidence in safety critical software employed with EO
  • Gain an appreciation of the data/information required to support the Safety Case of a complex EO system containing embedded safety critical software

Learning Methods:

This short course shall involve presentations by Systems Safety Engineers who have experience and knowledge of safety critical software systems.

Program Benefits:

  • Informing ADF members (Project Managers, Engineering Manager, Logisticians, etc) of the need to assess safety critical software within complex EO
  • Provides baseline technical requirements to all EO engineers developing Safety Cases for ADF EO containing safety critical software

Content:

  • Software Myths
  • Software Standards and Guidance
  • Software Safety Engineering
  • Examples of Software Related Safety Incidents
